Description

Generic Cialis (Tadalafil)

By

What is Cialis?

Cialis a medication used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). ED can be caused by a number of factors that can affect a man’s ability to hold an erection for intercourse. These factors can be both physical or psychological, such as anxiety or depression. BPH is caused by the enlargement of the prostate, which may create difficulties in urination. The chemical or generic name for Cialis is tadalafil. It is grouped into a class of medications known as phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitors.

How does Cialis work?

Cialis works by increasing cyclic guanosine monophosphate, or cGMP. This allows increased blood flow to the penis to create and hold an erection. The exact mechanism of action for treating benign prostatic hypertrophy is not known. However, this molecule also acts to relax smooth muscle cells in the bladder and prostate. When these muscles are relaxed, the prostate decreases in size. This decrease in size relieves pressure on the urethra and improves ease of urination.

How do I take Cialis?

Cialis comes in oral tablets of 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg, and 20 mg. For use as needed before sexual intercourse, 10 mg is recommended as the initial dose. This dose can be increased or decreased depending on tolerability and individual effectiveness. For daily use for ED, a lower dose of 2.5 mg can be taken without regard to timing of sexual activity. A dose of 5 mg can be taken once daily to treat BPH or ED and BPH together. This dose must be taken at the same time every day for optimal efficacy.

Cialis can be taken with or without food.

Side Effects

The most common side effects of Cialis include flushing, indigestion, headache, myalgia (muscle pain), back pain, and stuffy nose. Most of these side effects such as back and muscle aches are temporary and last 1 to 2 days. However, a consultation with a healthcare provider is recommended if these side effects do not go away.

Other side effects include priapism (an erection that does not go away) and rarely, vision or hearing loss.

Drug Interactions

When Cialis is taken with certain medications, interactions can develop. Medications such as nitrates, alpha blockers, antihypertensives, and alcohol can cause hypotension, or abnormally low blood pressure, when taken with Cialis. It should also be avoided with CYP3A4 inhibitors such as ketoconazole and ritonavir. CYP3A4 inducers such as rifampin can also interact with Cialis causing a decrease in medication concentrations. It is important to separate administration of these medications as directed by your physician.

Can I use Cialis if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

This medication is classified as pregnancy category B. In other words, animal studies revealed no evidence of harm to a fetus. However, Cialis is not indicated for use in women or children. Therefore, it is not recommended in these populations.

Precautions

Because the metabolism and excretion of Cialis involves the liver and kidneys, it may be advised to alter the dosage that is taken. In severe liver impairment, Cialis is not recommended. In renal impairment, the dosing and timing of the medication may need to be adjusted. Older individuals especially need to monitor these factors.

Individuals with heart failure among other cardiovascular problems should be advised not to take Cialis. The risk of a cardiovascular event may be increased with use of this medication.

Seek medical help in cases of priapism or sudden hearing and vision loss.

Additional Information

Taking Cialis does not offer any protection against sexually transmitted diseases. It is important to take all necessary measures to protect against sexually transmitted diseases, including Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).

Storage

This medication should be stored in a cool dry area to ensure optimal efficacy.

Summary

Cialis is a common medication used to treat erectile dysfunction and benign prostatic hypertrophy. It should be taken at the same time every day if it is being used to treat both indicated conditions. Consult immediate help in cases of sudden hearing or vision loss as well as an erection that lasts more than 4 hours. Overall aspects of use can be discussed with your physician or healthcare provider.
