What is this drug?

Valcivir is used to treat viral infections in immunocompetent patients. It is specially used for infections caused by herpes zoster, varicella-zoster and herpes simplex. It is used to treat shingles, chicken pox, cold sore and genital herpes. It is also used to prevent recurrence of genital herpes.

Classification and Mechanism of Action

Valcivir contains Valacyclovir as the active ingredient. It is an anti-viral agent. It inhibits the growth of the virus by blocking its DNA replication. This is accomplished by inhibiting and inactivating DNA polymerase enzyme and termination of the DNA chain. This causes irreversible damage to the DNA strand of the viral cell. It limits the growth of the virus in the blood.

Store it in a cool and dry place away from the reach of children.

How to take the medication?

Take it orally with or without food with a glass full of water. Drink plenty of fluids while taking this medicine.

Dosage

The initial starting dose is 1g- 2g twice in a day. Dose depends on the type and severity of infection. Consult your doctor to know your dose.

Overdose

Consult your doctor right away.

Missed Dose

If it is time for your next dose then skip the missed dose or else take it as soon as you remember. Do not double dose.

Warnings and Precautions

Inform your doctor if you have weak immune due to any disease, kidney ailments and if you are breast feeding an infant.

Possible Side Effects

·       headache, dizziness

·       GI disturbances

·       Liver problems – jaundice, deranged LFT

·       Fatigue, listlessness

Kidney problems, allergy to the medicine, liver problems, weak immunity

How long should you take the drug?

As long as prescribed.
