What is this drug?

Hyoscine butylbromide is an M-cholinergic receptors blocker. Its major pharmacological effects are lowering the tone and contractility of the smooth muscles of internal organs and decrease in the secretion of exocrine glands. Its affects on the smooth muscles have been well studied and proven with significant experience in the practical use. In several controlled studies and in various areas of clinical practice, hyoscine butylbromide was used as a reference anticholinergic medication for comparative evaluation of the efficacy, safety and cost of other medicines.

Medical properties

Possesses strong antispasmodic (eliminates spasms) effect on the smooth muscles of internal organs, including the gastrointestinal tract, biliary tract and urogenital system.Indications for use

These are spasms and increased motor activity of the gastrointestinal tract, spastic constipation, urinary spasms and biliary dyskinesia, peptic ulcer and duodenal ulcer, pilorospazm in infants, postoperative vomiting, emmeniopathy.

Dosage

Adults and children older than 6 years are prescribed 1-2 tablets 3-5 times a day orally or rectally 1-2 suppositories 3-5 times a day.

Side effects

These are very rare and include allergic reactions (rash). In high doses or intravenous use, possible side effects may be disturbance of accommodation, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, sleepiness etc.

Contraindications

These are hypersensitivity reaction to the drug. Glaucoma, prostate adenoma, pronounced cerebral atherosclerosis.

Pregnancy and lactation

Prescription during pregnancy can be done only if the expected benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the fetus. During lactation, hyoscine butylbromide should not be used.

Specific guidance

Patients suspected of having glaucoma, obstructive lesions of the bowel or urinary tract and people prone to tachyarrhythmias (rapid and irregular heartbeat).

Caution

People whose profession/work requires attention and speed of reaction may experience a temporary visual impairment.

Storage conditions

It should be stored at room temperature, suppositories in the refrigerator. Shelf Life of Pills is about 5 years and suppositories about 3 years.
