Description

This medicine contains the active ingredient oxymetazoline, which is a nasal decongestant. The nasal decongestant in this product helps to open up the nasal passages by reducing the excessive nasal secretions and reducing the swollen blood vessels. It helps you breathe more easily, opens the nasal and paranasal sinuses and Eustachian tube and relieves the accompanying symptoms of the common cold. The effects start within minutes and last for up to about 12 hours.

Oxymetazoline also has anti-inflammatory and antiviral effect on specific viruses that are often associated with respiratory problems.

This medicine is used for:

  • Rhinitis associated with colds
  • Allergic rhinitis
  • Inflammation of the nasal sinuses
  • Inflammation of the middle ear (otitis media)

Is Oxymetazoline suitable for me?

Oxymetazoline is not suitable for everyone. Do not use it

  • if you are allergic to oxymetazoline or to other ingredients of this medicine
  • if you have a dry inflammation of mucous membrane of the nose with scabs (atrophic inflammation of the lining of the nose)

 In particular, you must tell the doctor if you:

  • have chronic heart failure
  • have increased blood pressure (hypertension)
  • have a heart rhythm disorder (arrhythmia)
  • have increased eye pressure (narrow angle glaucoma)
  • have congenital disorder of the enzyme in the biosynthesis of heme (porphyria)
  • have diabetes
  • have increased activity of the thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism)
  • are pregnant, trying to get pregnant or breastfeeding

Oxymetazoline interacts with other medicines. It is most important that you tell the doctor all the medications and herbal supplements that you are currently taking.

How should I take Oxymetazoline?

This medicine is available in form of nasal spray, solution.

You should take oxymetazoline exactly as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist.

  • Nasal spray containing 0.5 mg/ml of oxymetazoline is intended only for adults and children older than 7 years. The usual dose is 1-2 inhalations in each nostril two to three times a day. The maximum daily dose for each nostril should be 2 sprays three times a day.
  • Nasal spray containing 0.25 mg/ml of oxymetazoline is intended only for children from 2 to 7 years. The usual dose is 1-2 inhalations in each nostril two to three times a day. The maximum daily dose for each nostril should be 2 sprays three times a day.

Do not use more of it, do not use it more often, or do not use it for a longer time than your doctor instructed. Do not miss any doses and apply the medicine at the same time each day. Do not apply two doses together if you miss a dose.

What are Oxymetazoline side effects?

Like all medicines oxymetazoline can cause side effects, including:

  • high blood pressure (hypertension)
  • unpleasant feelings of rapid or strong heartbeats
  • slow heart rate 
  • dizziness
  • headache, insomnia
  • irritability
  • transient dryness and burning sensation in the nose
  • dry mouth and throat
  • sneezing
  • nausea
  • swelling of mucous membrane of the nose (rhinitis medicamentosa)
