Description
What is it

Generic Nolvadex is a drug that acts as an anti-estrogen. It is used as endocrine treatment in cases of hormone receptor-positive cases of breast cancer. In addition to breast cancer, it is sometimes used in treatment of McCune-Albright syndrome, infertility, gynecomastia, bipolar disorder, angiogenesis and several other diseases. Still, it has been FDA-approved for cancer treatment, which remains its primary purpose.

Classification and Mechanism of Action

The active ingredient of Generic Nolvadex is tamoxifen, which acts as an antagonist of the estrogen receptors in the breasts, while in other tissues, e.g. endometrium, it acts as an agonist, which makes it a mixed agonist/antagonist. Some types of breast cancer cells require estrogen to grow. Tamoxifen binds itself to the estrogen receptors in those cells without activating them, preventing estrogen from binding to their receptors. This blocks the growth of breast cancer cells.

Looking after it

Generic Nolvadex should be stored at room temperature, in a dry and dark place, away from the reach of children.

How to take it

Generic Nolvadex is an oral medication, swallowed whole, without chewing or crushing it. It can be taken with or without food, preferably with some water.

Dosage

The usual prescribed dosage for metastatic breast cancer, ductal carcinoma in situ and prevention of breast cancer in high-risk patients is 10 mg of Generic Nolvadex twice a day or 20 mg once daily for five years. When used for stimulation of ovulation, the recommended dosage is 5 mg to 40 mg twice a day for four days.

Overdose

Symptoms of an overdose with Generic Nolvadex may include tremor, unsteady walking, irregular heartbeat and fainting. In case of an overdose please seek immediate medical attention.

Missed Dose

If you happen to miss a dose, take one when you can, but not if the time for the next scheduled dose is too near. Never double the dose.

Warnings and Precautions

Before taking this drug, notify your doctor in case you are suffering or have suffered from blood clots and conditions treated with blood thinners, if you have high cholesterol, diabetes, hypertension, liver disease, cataracts, if you are pregnant and if you are a smoker. Generic Nolvadex may interact adversely with blood thinners, bupropion, hormonal birth control, estrogens, phenobarbital, rifamycins, cimetidine and SSRI antidepressants.

Possible Side Effects

Generic Nolvadex may cause nausea, vomiting, leg cramps, hot flashes, muscle aches, thinning hair and loss of sexual desire and/or ability. More serious side effects, which require medical attention, may include blurred vision, severe abdominal pain, dark urine, yellowing of the skin and eyes and signs of fever. Severe allergic reactions to Generic Nolvadex are rare, but if they occur, they may include difficulty breathing, rash, hives, swelling, irregular heartbeat, fainting and seizure.

Treating breast cancer

Generic Nolvadex and its main ingredient, tamoxifen, are a usual form of treatment of those kinds of breast cancer that are associated with estrogen receptors, especially in pre-menopausal women. The original patent for this drug has expired but generic versions are available and still widely used.

When should it not be used?

Generic Nolvadex should not be used in case the patient has a medical history of allergic reactions to tamoxifen, other estrogen agonists or antagonists or to any of the inactive components of this drug.

How long should you take it

In many cases adequate treatment of breast cancer requires prolonged use of this medication. Do not stop using it without consulting your doctor, even if you believe your condition might be improving.
