Description
What is it

Generic Spiriva is an anticholinergic bronchodilator drug used in treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including bronchitis and emphysema. It relieves and prevents the symptoms such as wheezing, coughing and shortness of breath and improves the overall quality of life in people with COPD. It comes in form of an inhaler with capsules.

Classification and Mechanism of Action

The active ingredient of Generic Spiriva is tiotropium bromide, a long-acting anticholinergic bronchodilator. It is a muscarinic receptor antagonist that, although not selective, acts mostly on M3 muscarinic receptors on the smooth muscle cells and submucosal glands. It works by reducing the contraction of the smooth muscles in the airways and also by reducing the mucus secretions, thus causing the airways to relax and dilate.

Looking after it

Generic Spiriva inhaler and capsules should be kept in a dark, dry place at room temperature, away from the reach of children. The capsules should not be swallowed. The inhaler should be washed with plain water once per month and allowed to dry thoroughly. Be careful not to drop or break the inhaler. Once you remove a capsule from the blister, make sure to use it immediately, because exposure to air may decrease its effectiveness.

How to take it

Generic Spiriva capsules are designed specifically for use in inhalers. The capsules are placed in the piercing chamber, the inhaler is then closed, which pierces the capsule and releases the medication. It is recommended to deeply inhale through the mouthpiece two or three times to assure all of the medicine is absorbed.

Dosage

The exact dosage should be indicated by your doctor but the usual dosage of Generic Spiriva in treatment of COPD is two inhalations of one 18 mcg capsule per day.

Overdose

Generic Spiriva capsules can be dangerous if swallowed. If you accidentally swallow a capsule or use more than the recommended amount of the medication, seek immediate medical help.

Missed Dose

If you forget or accidentally miss a dose, take it as soon as you can, but not if the next scheduled dose is near. Do not take a double dose to make up for the one you missed.

Warnings and Precautions

Before starting using Generic Spiriva, inform your doctor of your medical history, especially in case of glaucoma, kidney disease and difficulty urinating. Also make sure to notify your doctor of any other medication you might be taking, since some of them may interact adversely with Generic Spiriva. Older adults, especially males, may be more prone to the side effects of this drug. When it comes to pregnancy and breastfeeding, the use of this drug is recommended only when or if clearly needed.

Possible Side Effects

Common side effects of Generic Spiriva include dry mouth, bad taste in mouth and constipation. These side effects are usually only temporary, and if they persist or worsen you should notify your health care provider. More serious but less likely side effects may include blurred vision and other vision changes, eye pain, difficult or painful urination and rapid heartbeat. Allergic reactions to this drug are not common, but if they happen, they require urgent medical assistance. Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include rash, hives, swelling, difficulty breathing, rapid or irregular heartbeat, dizziness, confusion, fainting, coma and seizures.

Treating COPD

Generic Spiriva is a very useful aid in treatment and prevention of breathing difficulties due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It is not designed to provide immediate relief for breathing problems. With its prolonged (24 hour) action it greatly reduces the frequency of wheezing, shallow breathing and coughing in people suffering from COPD.

When should it not be used?

Generic Spiriva should not be used in case of previous allergic reactions to tiotropium, ipratropium, atropine and other belladonna-similar medications. Caution is advised when using this drug during pregnancy since its effects on the unborn baby are unknown.

How long should you take it

Generic Spiriva requires regular use. Do not stop taking it without consulting your doctor even if your symptoms start improving soon.
