What is this drug?

Diamox is prescribed in glaucoma, cardiac and renal disease, seizures, cerebral oedema. It is also a drug of choice in treating altitude sickness. It reduces fluid collection in body.

Classification and Mechanism of Action

Diamox contains Acetazolamide which is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor. It is an anticonvulsant, diuretic and anti-glaucoma drug. It reduces the production of aqueous humor in the eye thus reducing eye pressure. It produces alkaline diuresis by inhibiting hydrogen ion secretion in the renal tubules. It also inhibits the carbonic anhydrase in the CNS system and that reduces abnormal CNS discharge.
