Apixaban: Uses, Dosing, and Safety Overview
Apixaban is an oral anticoagulant belonging to the class of direct Factor Xa inhibitors. It helps prevent the formation of harmful blood clots by blocking Factor Xa, an essential enzyme in the clotting process. Because of its effectiveness and predictable action, Apixaban has become widely used for patients who require long-term or short-term anticoagulation without frequent blood tests.
Indications
Apixaban is commonly prescribed for:
Prevention of stroke and systemic embolism in individuals with non-valvular atrial fibrillation.
Treatment of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE).
Prevention of recurrent DVT/PE after initial therapy.
Prophylaxis of DVT following hip or knee replacement surgery.
Dosage (General Standard Regimens)
Typical adult dosing varies by condition, but commonly includes:
Atrial fibrillation: Often 5 mg twice daily.
DVT/PE treatment: Often initiated with 10 mg twice daily for 7 days, followed by 5 mg twice daily.
Post-surgery prophylaxis: Usually 2.5 mg twice daily for a defined period.
Certain patients—particularly those with kidney impairment, low body weight, or elderly individuals—may require lower doses. Only a healthcare provider can determine the correct regimen.
Overdose
Taking more Apixaban than prescribed significantly increases the risk of severe bleeding. Symptoms may include unusual bruising, prolonged bleeding, blood in urine or stool, vomiting blood, dizziness, or weakness. There is an approved reversal agent (andexanet alfa), but emergency medical care is required immediately in any suspected overdose.
Important Safety Information
Patients should avoid combining Apixaban with other blood thinners, high-dose NSAIDs, or certain herbal products unless advised by a doctor. Kidney and liver function should be monitored in at-risk individuals. Because Apixaban thins the blood, missing doses may increase clotting risk, while double-dosing may lead to dangerous bleeding.
