What is this drug?

Hytrin (Terazosin) relaxes blood vessels – veins and arteries and allows improved blood flow. It is used to treat high blood pressure. It also relaxes the muscles in the neck of the urinary bladder and prostate and therefore is prescribed in prostate hyperplasia with urination problems.

Classification and Mechanism of Action

Hytrin  has Terazosin as the main ingredient which is an alpha-1 adrenergic blocker. It relaxes the veins and arteries and that reduces peripheral vascular resistance. The blood pressure decreases and improves the blood flow. Alpha-1 adrenoceptors are abundant in the prostate. Their stimulation increases the smooth muscle tone and thereby causing problem in urination. Hytrin blocks these receptors and relaxes the muscles thereby making urination easier.

Store it in a cool and dry place away from the reach of children. Do not use expired medicine.

How to take the medication?

Take it orally with or without food and as prescribed by your doctor.

Dosage

The initial starting dose is 1mg at bedtime. Thereafter it is titrated as per individual needs. Consult your doctor for your right dosage.

Overdose

Consult your doctor right away.

Missed Dose

If it is time for your next dose then skip the missed dose or else take it as soon as you remember. Do not double dose.

Warnings and Precautions

It may cause fainting and dizziness after the first dose. Do not operate machinery or drive. It affects pupils. If going for a cataract operation, inform your doctor. Avoid in prostate cancer.
