Product Name : Generic Folvite

Also known as : Apo-Folic, Folat, Folicare, Safol, Vitafol

Active ingredient : folic acid

What is it

Generic Folvite is a supplement of folic acid, which is the synthetic version of naturally occurring folate. Folate, which is one of the vitamins of the B complex (vitamin B9), can be found in some foods. In some cases it is necessary to take folic acid supplements in addition to folate from food. Low folate levels can lead to some forms of anemia and in pregnant women they increase the risk of spinal birth defects of the baby.

Classification and Mechanism of Action

Generic Folvite consists of folic acid, whose active form is also called methylfolate or levomefolate. This organic compound is found in yeast, liver and other natural sources. In some cases it needs to be supplemented, especially in case of pregnancy, poor diet and alcoholism. Folic acid is necessary for several processes in the body, such as metabolism of amino acids and histidine and synthesis of purine and thymidylates.

Looking after it

Generic Folvite should be kept in a dry, cool place, at room temperature and away from sources of direct moisture and sunlight.

How to take it

Generic Folvite is taken orally, preferably with some water, with or without food, usually once daily, unless otherwise recommended by your doctor.

The usual dosage of Generic Folvite is 0.4 mg for adults and children four years of age or older. For pregnant women the recommended dosage is 0.8 mg per day. The dosage may be adjusted by your doctor according to your needs and overall health.

Do not take more than the recommended amount of Generic Folvite. Symptoms of overdose may include severe vomiting and diarrhea, fainting and mental or mood changes. If you suspect an overdose, please seek immediate medical attention.

Missed Dose

If you accidentally skip a dose, take one when you can, but not if the next scheduled dose is too near. Do not double the dose.

Warnings and Precautions

Generic Folvite is generally well tolerated. However, do not self-medicate or take this medication in excessive amounts. Before using this medication, inform your doctor or pharmacist of any other medication or supplement you might be taking, including herbal products. Inform you doctor if you are suffering from a medical condition, especially the vitamin B12 deficiency.

Possible Side Effects

Generic Folvite has very few side effects and they are relatively uncommon. Some people may experience stomach upset, nausea and diarrhea. Allergic reactions are also rare but if they occur they require immediate medical assistance. Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include rash, hives, swelling of the face, tongue, lips and neck, chest pain, irregular heartbeat, difficulty breathing, fainting and seizures.

Treating folic acid deficiency

Generic Folvite is an excellent choice for people who need to increase their levels of folic acid. This particularly applies to pregnant women or women who plan on becoming pregnant in the near future. Folic acid is very important for an unborn baby and its deficiency can cause serious birth defects. Generic Folvite is also recommended in case of malnutrition or malabsorption of nutrients and in a number of health conditions that involve low folic acid levels.

When should it not be used?

Generic Folvite should not be used in case of previous allergic reactions to folic acid or to any of the inactive components of this drug.

How long should you take it

Take Generic Folvite for as long as required to achieve normal levels of folic acid. In most cases doctors recommend continuing with this drug even after the normal levels are achieved, which is called maintenance therapy.
