What is Cytoxan?
Cytoxan is a chemotherapeutic agent which suppresses immune response. It is prescribed in various kinds of cancers, autoimmune disorders like nephrotic syndrome and amyloidosis. It may also be prescribed after an organ transplant to prevent organ rejection.
Class and Mechanism of Action
Cytoxan contains Cyclophosphamide which is a neoplastic agent belonging to the group of alkylating agents. When administered it gets converted into an active metabolite in the body known as phosphoramide mustard. This metabolite is formed only in those cells that have low levels of ALDH (abnormal cells). It creates DNA linkage between and within the DNA strands of the tumor cells and causes cell death (apoptosis).
