Description

What is this drug?

Generic Alkeran is a chemotherapeutic agent which has Melphalan as the active drug. It is phenylalanine derivative and is used in treating cancers like multiple Myeloma, Rhabdomyosarcoma and others.

Classification and Mechanism of Action

Generic Alkeran is also called as L-sarcolysin or L-PAM and is an alkylating agent. It kills cancer cells predominantly at resting phase but is also effective against dividing cells. It kills them by destroying their RNA or DNA and thereby killing them.

Looking after your drug

Store it in a cool and dry place away from the reach of children. Keep it in its original pack and do not share with anyone. Take the tablet whole and do not break, chew or dissolve in water.

How to take the medication?

Take it orally on an empty stomach preferably 1-2 hour before food.

Dosage

Dosage depends on the weight, the age of the patient and the condition being treated. Consult your doctor to establish your dose and schedule.

Overdose

Overdose can cause serious side effects. Seek medical help immediately..

Missed Dose

If it is time for your next dose then skip the missed dose or else take it as soon as you remember. Do not double dose.

Warnings and Precautions

Do not take it with Nalidixic acid and Palifermin. Regular complete blood count to be done as it causes bone marrow suppression

Watch for abnormal bleeding.
