Description

What Is Metoprolol?

Metoprolol is an oral medication used to treat a wide range of cardiovascular conditions. It is most commonly prescribed for high blood pressure (hypertension), but it is also used to manage:

  • Angina (chest pain)

  • Ventricular tachycardia

  • Supraventricular tachycardia

  • Congestive heart failure

  • Acute myocardial infarction (heart attack)

  • Long QT syndrome

  • Vasovagal syncope

  • Migraine prevention

  • Symptoms of hyperthyroidism

  • Certain anxiety disorders

Metoprolol is widely used because of its effectiveness and safety profile when taken as prescribed.

How Metoprolol Works

Metoprolol is a beta-blocker. It works by blocking beta receptors in the heart and blood vessels, which:

  • Lowers blood pressure

  • Reduces heart rate

  • Decreases strain on the heart

Because of these effects, Metoprolol is helpful in treating many conditions related to high blood pressure and abnormal heart rhythms.
It is also known under brand names such as Lopressor®, Betaloc®, Selokeen®, and Neobloc®.

How to Store Metoprolol

  • Keep in a cool, dry, dark place

  • Store out of reach of children

How to Take Metoprolol

  • Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor

  • Take with or right after a meal

  • Take it at the same time every day

  • Do not stop the medication suddenly

  • Inform your doctor or surgeon if you are scheduled for surgery

  • Expect regular blood pressure checks during treatment

Never adjust your dose without your doctor’s guidance.

Dosage

Dosage varies depending on the condition being treated.
Typical recommendations:

  • Initial dose: around 100 mg per day (taken once or split into two doses)

  • Maintenance dose: 100–450 mg per day

Your doctor will determine the correct amount for your specific needs.

Missed Dose

  • Take it as soon as you remember

  • Skip it if your next dose is near

  • Do not take two doses at once

Overdose Warning

Seek emergency medical help if you suspect an overdose.

Warnings & Precautions

Metoprolol may affect alertness and reaction time.
Be cautious when:

  • Driving

  • Operating machinery

Avoid alcohol, as it can increase side effects.
If you become pregnant, tell your doctor immediately.

Possible Side Effects

Mild side effects may include:

  • Rash or itching

  • Fatigue or dizziness

  • Confusion or memory issues

  • Nightmares or insomnia

  • Diarrhea

Seek medical help right away if you notice:

  • Very slow heartbeat

  • Shortness of breath

  • Rapid weight gain

  • Clammy hands or feet

  • Fainting or severe lightheadedness

Who Should Not Use Metoprolol?

Do not use Metoprolol if you:

  • Are allergic to metoprolol or other beta-blockers

  • Have serious heart rhythm problems (e.g., heart block, sick sinus syndrome)

  • Have severe circulation issues

  • Have severe heart failure

  • Have a history of very slow heart rate

Pregnant women should use Metoprolol only if specifically instructed by a doctor.

How Long Should You Take Metoprolol?

Take Metoprolol for as long as your doctor prescribes.
Do not stop the medication suddenly, even if you feel better—this can be dangerous for your heart.
