Generic Fosamax is a medication used in treatment of osteoporosis and bone pain in conditions such as Paget’s disease, metastatic breast cancer and multiple myeloma. Osteoporosis is common among women in menopause and some form of treatment is required to keep their bones from becoming brittle and easy to break. This drug is also prescribed for osteoporosis due to factors other than menopause, and it can also be used to treat several other bone disorders. Generic Fosamax has been FDA-approved since 2008.
Classification and Mechanism of ActionThe active ingredient of Generic Fosamax is alendronate, a bisphosphonate drug. Human bones are constantly remodeling – osteoblasts lay down new bone and the old bone is removed by osteoclasts. In some people, bone removal by osteoclasts is prevalent over the formation of new bone, which leads to brittleness and easy breakage. This is particularly common in and after menopause. Bisphosphonates like alendronate strengthen the bones by preventing bone absorption by osteoclasts and by promoting bone density.
