What is it

Generic Flagyl is an antibiotic that works against anaerobic bacteria and certain parasites. It is an antibiotic, antiprotozoal and amebicide. It is the first choice in treatment of early Clostridium difficile infections, among others. It is used to treat bacterial peritonitis, liver and pelvis abscesses and vaginitis caused by trichomonas. In topical form, it can also be used in treatment of rosacea and fungating tumors.

Classification and Mechanism of Action

The active ingredient of Generic Flagyl is metronidazole, a nitroimidazole antibiotic, amebicide and antiprotozoal. When taken metronidazole is absorbed by the bacteria and the parasites. Once it enters them, it deactivates selected enzymes which results in cell death and the bacteria or parasites die off, unable to survive or spread.

Generic Flagyl should be kept at room temperature, in a dark, dry place, away from the reach of children.

How to take it

Generic Flagyl 200 mg is an oral medication, taken by mouth, with some water. If it causes stomach problems, it can be taken with meals. Always use this drug exactly as indicated by your doctor.

Dosage

The exact dosage of Generic Flagyl depends on the infection it is prescribed for. For example, the dosage for amebic dysentery is 750 mg three times per day, for anaerobic infections it is 7.5 mg per kilogram of body weight every six hours and for bacterial vaginosis it is 750 mg once per day. Clostridium difficile is treated with 200-500 mg for times per day and giardia with 250 mg three times daily.

Overdose

Symptoms of overdose with Generic Flagyl may include severe nausea and vomiting, dizziness, fainting and seizures. If you think you have taken more than the allowed amount of this drug, seek immediate medical attention.

Missed Dose

In case you miss a dose of Generic Flagyl, take the dose as soon as you remember, but not if the time for the next scheduled dose is too soon.

Warnings and Precautions

Inform your doctor if you are allergic to other nitroimidazoles, if you suffer from liver or kidney problems, Crohn’s disease, blood disorders, nervous system disorders, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Also inform them of any other medication you are taking, amprenavir, disulfiram, ritonavir and medications containing alcohol. Do not consume alcohol while taking this drug.

Possible Side Effects

Commonly observed side effects may include nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, diarrhea, headache, dry mouth, headache, changes in taste, loss of appetite and constipation. More serious but less common side effects include eye pain, vision changes, stiff neck, unusual bleeding or bruising, persistent fever, nausea and vomiting, sore throat. Prolonged use of Generic Flagyl may cause yeast infections and oral thrush.

Treating anaerobic and protozoan infections

Thanks to its active ingredient, metronidazole, Generic Flagyl is an excellent choice in treatment of many infections caused by anaerobic bacteria and protozoa, especially giardia, C. diff, H. pylori and others. Metronidazole toxicity is rare and the drug is generally well tolerated, provided it is taken as indicated.

When should it not be used?

Generic Flagyl should not be used in people who have had an allergic reaction to metronidazole or any other nitroimidazole antibiotic. It should be taken with caution during pregnancy, only when clearly needed and after consulting a doctor. Alcohol consumption during treatment with this drug can be very dangerous.

How long should you take it

Take Generic Flagyl only as long as needed to cure the infection, as indicated by your doctor or pharmacist.  Avoid prolonged use.
