What is this drug?

Chloromycetin Ophthalmic Ointment is an eye ointment prescribed to treat eye conjunctivitis. It is prescribed only for Chloromycetin susceptible organisms and when drugs which are less potentially dangerous are ineffective.

Classification and Mechanism of Action

Chloromycetin Ophthalmic Ointment contains chloramphenicol as the main drug. It is a broad spectrum antibiotic and is quite effective against staph infections. It stops the growth of bacteria by hindering the process of protein synthesis in the bacterial cell.

Store it in its pack in a cool and dry place away from the reach of children.

How to take Chloromycetin ointment?

Remove the cap of the tube. Squeeze and apply a thin line of medicine along the lower lid of the eye. Blink to spread the medicine. Do not touch your eye while applying.


Recommended dose is a thin layer in the affected eye every 3 hours apart.


Wash your eye with plenty of water for 15 minutes and consult your doctor right away.

Missed Dose

If it is time for your next dose then skip the missed dose or else take it as soon as you remember.

Warnings and Precautions

Do not contaminate the tip of the tube. Do not use if you are allergic to the drug. Use only for chloramphenicol susceptible organisms.

Possible Side Effects

·       Mild itching, stinging or burning

·       Eye soreness, swelling

When Chloromycetin ophthalmic​ ointment should not be used?

Bone marrow depression, aplastic anaemia, blood dyscrasias .

How long should you take the drug?

Continue till 48 hours after the eye becomes normal.
