Description

What is Ritonavir (Generic Norvir)?

The generic name of ritonavir has been norvir. It is an antiviral medicine that inhibits the human immune deficiency virus (HIV) cells from spreading and multiplying in the body.  Norvir is used to treat HIV that causes AIDS.

Classification and mechanism of action

Ritonavir is an oral medication that is used for treating HIV. It belongs to a drug class called protease inhibitors. HIV multiplies within the cells of the body. The virus is released from the HIV cells and spreads to the healthy cells. This is how it infects the other cells in the body and continues to grow. The virus produces proteins. Some proteins are proteins from the virus. They are called structural proteins. Other proteins manufacture DNA and other components of the new virus. Protease forms new structural proteins and enzymes. Ritonavir blocks the protease activity to form defective viruses in the body’s cells.
