What is this drug?
Nizoral Tablets is an anti-infective used to treat very specific kinds of fungal infections. It is not used for fungal infections of skin, nails and brain. Infections caused by P.ovale are most sensitive to Nizoral.
Classification and Mechanism of Action
Nizoral Tablets contains Ketoconazole as the generic and it belongs to the azole antifungals. It acts by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, a sterol essential for the fungal cell wall. The cell wall weakens and leaks and thus killing the fungal cell.
Looking after your drug
Store it in a cool and dry place away from the reach of children.
How to take the medication?
Take it orally once a day. Take with food to reduce gastric upset.
Dosage
The usual starting dose is 200 mg once a day. Consult your doctor before starting this medicine.
Overdose
Consult your doctor right away.
Missed Dose
If it is time for your next dose then skip the missed dose or else take it as soon as you remember. Do not double dose.
Warnings and Precautions
It can cause serious and fatal liver toxicity. Inform your doctor if you are an alcoholic; suffer from liver disease or adrenal gland problems. Avoid in the first trimester of pregnancy.
Possible Side Effects
· GI upset
· Dizziness, tachycardia, fainting
· Unusual bleeds or bruising
· Tingling sensation in fingers and toes
· Confusing thoughts of self-harm, depression
· Jaundice
When Nizoral Tablets should not be used?
Hypersensitivity to Nizoral, alcoholic patient, liver or adrenal insufficiency
How long should you take the drug?
As long as prescribed.
