Description

ulvicin For Humans

Product Name : Generic Fulvicin

Also known as : Grifulvin, Crivicin, S-Fulvin, Grison-250, Gris-Pe

Active ingredient : griseofulvin

What is it

Generic Fulvicin is an oral medication used in treatment of fungal infections of skin, nails and hair in cases when the infection does not respond to topical treatment. It works by stopping the fungi from growing and spreading. It is not effective against local bacterial or yeast infections.

Classification and Mechanism of Action

The active ingredient of Generic Fulvicin is griseofulvin, an antifungal agent administered orally. This drug binds to tubulin and inhibits mitosis, and also to keratin, in keratin precursor cells, making them resistant to fungi. It reaches its site of action when the infected skin or hair is replaced by the newly  created keratin-griseofulvin complex.

Looking after it

Generic Fulvicin should be kept in a dry, dark place, at room temperature, away from the reach of children.

How to take it

This medication is taken orally, swallowed whole with some water. For best results, take it after meals, avoiding very greasy or fatty foods. This drug is the most effective when there is a constant level of it in the body, which is why it is recommended to take it at even intervals.

Dosage

The usual dosage for tinea corporis, tinea cruris and tinea barbis is 500 mg daily (one 250 mg tablet two times a day). More persistent infections, such as tinea pedis and tinea unguium, may require larger dosages, e.g. 1000 mg daily.

Overdose

Never take more than the maximum allowed amount of this drug. If you suspect an overdose, seek immediate medical attention in an ER or at your local poison control center.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take one when you can, but not if the time for the next scheduled dose is near.

Warnings and Precautions

Caution is advised for people who suffer from porphyria, liver failure and lupus. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking this drug and also avoid prolonged exposure to the sun. This drug may make you dizzy, in which case you should not drive or operate any heavy machinery. Avoid using this drug in pregnancy. Generic Fulvicin may interact with other medications, especially warfarin and barbiturates, and it may reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills. Prolonged use of this drug may cause oral thrush or vaginal yeast infection.

Possible Side Effects

Common side effects of Generic Fulvicin include headache, nausea, vomiting, upset stomach and difficulty sleeping. More serious side effects, which need to be reported to a doctor, include hearing changes, butterfly rash on the face, joint and muscle pain, fever, persistent vomiting, frothy urine, blood traces in urine or vomit, bloody stool, severe abdominal pain.

Treating fungal infections

Generic Fulvicin is a highly effective oral antifungal prescribed in cases where a fungal infection of the skin, hair or nails is not responding to topical treatment. The generic version of the drug is equally effective as the brand versions, and usually cheaper. If you have a persistent local fungal infection, talk to your doctor about starting this medication.

When should it not be used?

Generic Fulvicin may not be suitable for pregnant women and for women who plan on becoming pregnant soon. Do not take this drug if you suspect you might be allergic to griseofulvin or any of the inactive components of this drug.

How long should you take it

Treatment of fungal infections may require prolonged use of Generic Fulvicin. Do not stop using this drug without consulting your doctor, even if your symptoms start to improve.
