Description
What is it

Generic Flovent Inhaler is a nasal spray designed to relieve the symptoms of allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and also the discomfort and symptoms associated with non-allergic rhinitis. It is a corticosteroid applied in form of nasal spray, with the purpose of relieving symptoms such as itchy and runny nose, postnasal drip, stuffy nose and sneezing.

Classification and Mechanism of Action

Generic Flovent Inhaler is based on fluticasone propionate, the main ingredient of this nasal spray. It is an aqueous suspension meant for local administration in form of nasal spray applied to the mucous membranes of the nasal cavity. Fluticasone propionate is a corticosteroid and it alleviates the symptoms of allergic and non-allergic rhinitis by reducing the inflammation in the nasal cavity.

Looking after it

Generic Flovent Inhaler should be kept in a dry, dark place, at room temperature, away from the reach of children.

How to take it

Generic Flovent Inhaler is administered directly to the nasal cavity by inserting the tip of the container inside each nostril and releasing the spray by pressing on the container. Make sure to clean the tip and to replace the cap after using the medication.

Dosage

The recommended dosage for adults is 200 mcg per day, administered as two sprays in each nostril once per day. The dosage can also be divided into 100 mcg twice a day (one spray in each nostril). The maximum allowed dosage is 200 mcg per day. For children, the recommended dosage is 100 mcg per day (one spray per nostril once a day).

Overdose

Overdose with Generic Flovent Inhaler is rare and requires a very large amount of this drug administered at the same time. However, if it occurs, make sure to seek immediate medical attention or contact your local poison control center.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take one as soon as you can, but do not double the dose (which may happen if you take the missed dose too close to the next scheduled one).

Warnings and Precautions

Let your doctor know if you have ever had an allergic reaction to fluticasone or to one or more of the inactive ingredients of this medication. Generic Flovent Inhaler may not be suitable for people who have recently suffered a trauma to the nose, who have recently had or will soon have a nasal surgery or have ulcers and lesions in their nose. In addition, make sure you inform your doctor if you are suffering from tuberculosis, herpes of the eye, glaucoma and cataract. Avoid exposure to infections, especially chickenpox and measles.

Possible Side Effects

Some of the commonly observed side effects of Generic Flovent Inhaler include nasal irritation, itching, burning, nausea, vomiting, headache, sore throat and cough. More serious but less likely side effects may include persistent fever, severe headache, nasal pain and difficulty swallowing. Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include rash, swelling, irregular heartbeat, chest pain, difficulty breathing, changes in blood pressure, confusion, severe dizziness, fainting and seizure.

Treating seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis

Generic Flovent Inhaler, based on fluticasone, is an excellent choice in treatment of allergic rhinitis, whether it is seasonal (hay fever) or perennial (e.g. animal hair allergies, dust allergies, etc). It is easy to use and it does not involve dangerous side effects. The generic version of this nasal spray is just as effective and reliable as the more expensive brand versions.

When should it not be used?

Do not use Generic Flovent Inhaler if you are suffering from hypersensitivity to fluticasone, other corticosteroids or any of the inactive components of the drug.

How long should you take it

Take Generic Flovent Inhaler for as long as indicated by your doctor. Avoid prolonged use.
