What is it

Generic Foradil inhaler is a capsuled powder designed for use in oral inhalers. Its main purpose is the management of asthma and other lung and breathing problems, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Generic Foradil is used as concomitant therapy, along with a long-term asthma medication, usually a corticosteroid, which means it is more of a symptom controller than a long-term treatment solution.

Classification and Mechanism of Action

The active ingredient of Generic Foradil is formoterol fumarate, which is a long-acting beta-2 agonist with the extended duration of up to 12 hours (short-acting beta-2 agonists last up to six hours). When this medication is inhaled, the formoterol penetrates the membranes of the lung cells and it is then slowly released back out, where it can interact with beta-2 adrenergic receptors.  This medication dilates the airways and allows unobstructed air flow in the lungs.

Looking after it

The Generic Foradil capsules and the inhaler need to be stored in a dry, cool and dark place, away from the reach of children. Be careful not to drop the inhaler and avoid spraying into your nose and eyes. Keep the mouthpiece clean and dry at all times.

How to take it

The capsules of Generic Foradil should be placed at the well of the inhaler and pierced by pressing the appropriate buttons on the inhaler. This creates a solution that is dispersed in the air stream when the patient inhales deeply and rapidly from the mouthpiece.

Dosage

The usual dosage of Generic Foradil  is one 12 mcg capsule in the inhaler every 12 hours. The same dosage can be applied for COPD.

Overdose

Symptoms of an overdose with Generic Foradil may include hypertension, hypotension, angina, rapid or irregular heartbeat, severe fatigue, nausea and dizziness, metabolic acidosis, fainting, coma and seizure. If you have taken more than the maximum recommended dosage of this drug, seek immediate medical attention.

Missed Dose

In case you miss a dose, take one when you can, but not if the next scheduled dose is near. Do not double the dose.

Warnings and Precautions

Use this medication with caution in patients with cardiovascular disorders, diabetes and ketoacidosis. Do not use Generic Foradil as treatment for acute symptoms. Make sure you are also receiving an adequate long-term asthma treatment. Do not use this medication if you are hypersensitive to any of its ingredients. Check your condition regularly since in some cases, especially due to inappropriate use, this medication can exacerbate your asthma.

Possible Side Effects

Generic Foradil may cause headache, nausea, dizziness, low or high blood pressure, tremor, dry mouth, palpitations, fatigue, low or high blood sugar levels and insomnia. Signs of a serious allergic reaction may include swelling, rash, hives, difficulty breathing, irregular or rapid heartbeat, fainting and seizures.

Treating asthma and COPD

Generic Foradil should only be used as concomitant therapy, along with corticosteroids prescribed for asthma or COPD. The long-term treatment must not be discontinued once the treatment with Foradil is initiated. Generic Foradil is a good choice in asthma and COPD treatment because of its extended duration, as long as it is taken exactly as indicated.

When should it not be used?

Generic Foradil should not be used in patients who are hypersensitive to formoterol or other beta-2 agonists.
