What is this drug

Generic Carafate is a medication that is used in treatment of duodenal ulcers. It can also be used in treating gastroesophageal reflux diseases as well as stress ulcers.

Classification and Mechanism of Action

Generic Carafate is sucrose sulfate-aluminium complex, an oral gastrointestinal drug which works by preventing gastric acid from physically coming into contact with the areas in the gastrointestinal tract that are affected and that would be further affected unless protected from the acid. Generic Carafate reacts with hydrochloric acid and forms a viscous material which acts as acid buffer for anywhere between 6 and 8 hours upon ingesting it.

Looking after your drug

Store Generic Carafate away from moisture and heat, in a dark place away from children.

How to take the medication

You need to take your Generic Carafate exactly as prescribed by the doctor in exactly the dosages that the doctor has prescribed. Generic Carafate is best taken on an empty stomach, at least one hour prior to a meal or two hours after one. You may be prescribed some other drugs for treating ulcers and you need to make sure that you are using the correct regimen and that you are following doctor's instructions. Do not discontinue the drug until the full regimen is completed as this might exacerbate the condition.

Dosage

The usual recommended dosage for duodenal cancers is 1 g four times a day of Generic Carafate. Of course, if your doctor prescribes you with a different dosage, stick to it.

Overdose

If a Generic Carafate overdose is suspected, seek emergency medical help.

Missed Dose

Take your missed dose of Generic Carafate as soon as you remember. However, avoid taking it within two hours of taking any other medication. Do not make up for the missed dose with extra medicine.

Warnings and Precautions

Inform your doctor about all the other drugs that you might be taking and the conditions that you might be treated for before they prescribe you with Generic Carafate. Do not exceed your dosage and do not tamper with the regimen without discussing it with the doctor.

Possible Side Effects

Side effects that may be caused by Generic Carafate include: back pain, headaches, spinning sensation, drowsiness, dizziness, insomnia, mild skin rash or itching, diarrhea, constipation, stomach pain, upset stomach, vomiting, nausea. If any of these side effects should become too bothersome or persistent, inform your doctor.

Treating ulcers with Generic Carafate

Ulcers are one of the most common conditions in the world and in order to successfully treat this condition, the use of antacids is often needed. Generic Carafate is one of the most popular forms of antacids as they are not too aggressive and as they work very simply as a barrier between the lining of the stomach and the acid that causes the ulcers.

When the drug should not be used

Generic Carafate should not be used by people allergic to sucralfate. You also need to inform your doctor of any other chronic conditions that you might be suffering from, especially any cases of kidney disease or diabetes.

How long should you take the drug

You need to take the drug for as long as it was prescribed to you. Do not discontinue the drug simply because the symptoms have subsided. This does not necessarily mean that the ulcers have cleared.
