Description

What is this drug?

Maxolon is a medicine used primarily to treat nausea and vomiting associated with variety of reasons like surgery, GERD, diabetes, motion sickness, radiation or chemotherapy. It is also used to increase gastric emptying.

Classification and Mechanism of Action

Maxolon contains Metoclopramide which is an antiemetic belonging to the group of dopamine receptor antagonist. The brain when stimulated generates nerve impulses and activates the vomiting centre. Metoclopramide binds to D2 (Dopamine) receptors the brain and blocks the direct and indirect stimulus that excites the brain and causes vomiting.

The gastrokinetic (Gastric emptying effect) is due to its muscarinic activity.  Maxolon also increase the tone of the lower esophageal sphincter.

Store it in a cool and dry place away from the reach of children.

How to take Maxolon?

Take it orally half an hour before a meal and at the bedtime.

Dosage

The usual adult dosage is 10 mg 4 times in a day. However, it varies as per individual needs. Consult your doctor for you correct dose.

Overdose

Consult your doctor right away.

Missed Dose

If it is time for your next dose then skip the missed dose or else take it as soon as you remember. Do not double dose.

Warnings and Precautions

Overdose and long term use can cause serious side effects called extrapyramidal side effects. Do not take alcohol with this medication.

Possible Side Effects

Diarrhoea, drowsiness, tiredness, dizziness, insomnia, headache, and extrapyramidal effects

When Maxolon should not be used?

·       Intestinal block, perforation or bleed

·       Epilepsy/ seizure disorder

·       Pheochromocytoma

How long should you take Maxolon?

Do not take more than 12 weeks.
