What is the drug?
Miglitol postpones the digestion of carbohydrates in the body. It is used to cure type 2 diabetes by controlling blood sugar.
Classification and Mechanism of Action
Miglitol can be classified as a drug called alpha-glucosidase. The enzymes in the intestine digest the carbohydrates. The body absorbs smaller sugars and increases the blood sugar levels in the body. The pancreas releases the alpha-amylase enzymes to digest the carbohydrates into oligosaccharides. Miglitol slows down the enzyme action. As a result, the appearance of sugar in the blood also slows down.
