What is this drug?
Chloroquine is an antimalarial drug which is primarily prescribed to treat certain strains of malaria. It is sometimes also prescribed for liver amebiasis and Rheumatoid arthritis.
Chloroquine is found to help fighting CoronaVirus Covid-19.
Classification and Mechanism of Action
Chloroquine is an aminoquinoline which is an antimalarial and amebicide. The malarial parasite enters our red blood cell and attaches itself to the heme part of the RBC. Chloroquine is absorbed rapidly from our gut and enters the red blood cell to kill the malarial parasite.
Looking after your drug
Store it in its container in a cool and dry place away from the reach of children. Do not use expired medicine.
How to take Chloroquine?
Take it orally with a glass of water exactly as prescribed by your doctor. To prevent GI upset take it with food.
Dosage
Usual recommended dose for malaria is 500mg on the same day every week. Consult your doctor for the right dosage.
Overdose
Overdose can be fatal. Seek medical help right away.
Missed Dose
If it is time for your next dose then skip the missed dose or else take it as soon as you remember. Do not double dose.
Warnings and Precautions
It interacts with certain medications. Consult your doctor. Do not use if pregnant, allergic or have eye problems.
