What is this drug?

Desmopressin is the medication, which is the natural anti-diuretic hormone released by the pituitary. This medicine is used to reduce excessive urine production. The patient of diabetes insipidus can use it for reduction in frequent urination.

Classification and Mechanism of Action

• Pharmacologic class: Posterior pituitary hormone
• Therapeutic class: Antidiuretic hormone

This medicine is available in tablet and it is prescribed to control frequent urination and thirst. It is also used for the treatment of  primary nocturnal enuresis or bedwetting.

This  medicine can be stored at room temperature of 20 to 25 and refrigerate its injection at 2 to 8 degree centigrade.

How to take the medication

The patients take these tablets by mouth after every 12 hours and the intranasal and intravenous doses can be taken on the daily basis.

Dosage

• Adult and 12 years children: 0.05 mg by mouth every 12 hours 
• Children of 4 years to under 12 years of age: 0.05 mg every 12 hours
• The adults and children over 12 years can take an intranasal dose of 10 to 40 mcg per day
• The children of 3 months to 12 years can take 5 to 30 mcg daily
• Adults and children over 12 years can take an intravenous dose from 2 to 4 mcg per day

Overdose

The patients should avoid its overdose as it can cause a too low level of Sodium due to increased water level or reduced salt levels. So the person can suffer with seizure and in extreme cases, the patient may die.

Missed Dose

If the patient misses a dose, then he should take the next dose after 12 hours in the second intake but he should not take a double dose of this drug, as it can cause  low water levels in the body.

Warnings and Precautions

This medicine can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Consult your doctor if you have any kidney disease or low level of sodium in your blood.

Possible Side Effects

This medicine, Desmopressin has some side effects like

• Headache
• Abdominal pain
• Fatigue
• Pink eye
• Rhinitis
• Conjunctivitis

When the drug should not be used

The patients should avoid taking this medication with empty stomach as it can create problems for the patients. Normally the patients are advised to take the medicine after eating a meal and they should take care the gap by taking medicine, which is about 12 hours.

How long should you take the drug

The patients should continue taking the medicine till complete recovery from the disease.
