Why is this medication prescribed?
Vioxx is used to reduce pain and inflammation.
It is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).
Vioxx is a medicine
for relief of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis in
adults, treatment of
menstrual pain, and management of acute pain in adults.
How should this medicine be used? Vioxx should be
taken once daily. Your doctor will decide what dose of Vioxx you
should take and how long you should take it. You can take Vioxx with
or without food.
What side effects can this medication cause?
Tell your doctor if any of
the following side effects are severe or do not go away:
- weakness
- stomach upset
- stomach pain
If you experience any the following side effects, call your doctor immediately:
- chest pain
- difficulty swallowing/breathing
- bloody vomit
- red blood in stools
- unusual bleeding
- dizziness
- hoarseness
- loss of appetite
- pain in the upper right part of the stomach
- yellow skin/eyes
- flu symptoms
- rash
- swelling of the eyes, face, throat, lips, tongue, hands, feet, lower legs or
ankles.
What special precautions should I follow?- Do
not take Vioxx if you: have had an allergic reaction such as asthma
attacks, hives, or swelling of the throat and face.
- Vioxx should not be
used in late pregnancy because it can harm the foetus.
- tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or if you are
breast-feeding.
- Tell your
doctor if you have history of angina, heart attack or a blocked
artery in your heart; liver disease; heart failure; kidney disease;
high blood pressure.
- Tell your
doctor if youhad an allergic reaction to aspirin or other
NSAIDs like: naproxen and ibuprofen; had a serious stomach problem in the past.
