Why is this medication prescribed?
Tenormin is used to treat high blood pressure, heart attacks and
to prevent angina.
It works by slowing the heart rate and relaxing the blood
vessels so that the heart does not have to pump as hard.
Tenormin is in a class of medications called beta blockers.
How should this medicine be used?
It is usually taken once or twice a day. You can take it with or without food.
Follow the directions on your prescription label
carefully, and ask your doctor to explain any part you do not
understand. Take Tenormin exactly as directed. Do not take more or less
than prescribed by your doctor.
What side effects can this medication cause?
Tenormin may cause side effects. Tell your doctor if any of
these side effects are severe or do not go away:
- tiredness
- drowsiness
- depression
- dizziness
- lightheadedness
If you experience any of the following side effects, call your doctor immediately:
- fainting
- breath difficulties
- swelling of the hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
What special precautions should I follow?
Before taking Tenormin,
- Tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to Tenormin or any
other medications.
- Tell your doctor about all the
medications you are taking, especially the following: calcium channel blockers such
as diltiazem (Tiazac, Cardizem, Dilacor) and verapamil (Calan, Isoptin, Verelan);
clonidine (Catapres); reserpine (Serpalan,
Serpasil, Serpatabs) and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory
medications (NSAIDs) such as indomethacin (Indocin).
- Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had diabetes; severe allergies;
asthma; an overactive thyroid gland; heart failure; a slow heart rate;
circulation problems; pheochromocytoma; or kidney or heart disease.
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are
breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking Tenormin, call your doctor
immediately.
