Why is this medication prescribed? Advair (Seretide)
is used to treat people with asthma and chest
illnesses. The Salmeterol relaxes the muscles in the walls of the
small air passages in the lungs. This helps to open the airways and
makes it more easy for the air to get in/out of the lungs. Fluticasone
propionate belongs to a group of medicines called corticosteriods
which are often referred to simply as steroids. Corticosteroids are
used to treat breathing problems because they have an
anti-inflammatory action. Corticosteroids also helping prevent
asthma attacks .
How should this medicine be used? Advair (Seretide) should be inhaled into your lungs. If you have any
difficulties or don't understand the instructions ask your doctor
or the pharmacist. Advair (Seretide) should only be breathed in through the mouth.
Usually the label on it will tell you how much to take and how often ( mostly two doses daily).
What side effects can this medication cause?
Fluticasone and salmeterol may cause side effects. Tell your
doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:
- headache
- sinus pain
- cough
- upset stomach
- vomiting
- diarrhea
- runny nose
- sneezing
- sore throat
- hoarseness
- stomach pain
- muscle/bone pain
- throat/nose irritation
The following symptoms are
uncommon, but if you experience any of them, you should call your doctor immediately:
- choking or difficulty swallowing
- increased difficulty breathing
- noisy, high-pitched breathing
- pounding or fast heartbeat
- shaking hands
- hives
- skin rash
- swelling of the face/throat/tongue/lips
- fever
- chest pain
- chills
- nervousness
- blurred vision
- white patches in the mouth
Fluticasone and salmeterol may cause children to grow more
slowly. If your child is using fluticasone and salmeterol and does not seem to
be growing properly, talk to your child's doctor.
What special precautions should I follow?
You need to be sure your doctor knows what other medicines you are
taking. Talk to your
doctor if : 1. you are pregnant or likely to become pregnant soon
2.you are breast-feeding. 3. You are having treatment for a thyroid condition/heart problem/high blood pressure 4. You are allergic to
Flixotide or fluticasone propionate. 5. You ever had thrush in
your mouth. 6. You being or ever been treated for
tuberculosis (TB). 7. You are allergic to Serevent
or salmeterol xinafoate.

8. You are taking ritonavir, used in the treatment of HIV
(AIDS) .
Do not use Advair (Seretide)
if the packaging is torn or shows signs of tampering.
