Why is this medication prescribed?
Generic Haldol is used to treat psychotic disorders and symptoms
such as delusions, hallucinations,hostility, agitation, mania and to control muscular tics of
the face, hands, shoulders and neck. It is also used to treat hyperactive children and in severe behavioral
problems in children.
How should this medicine be used?
It usually is taken two or three times a day. Follow the directions on
your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor to explain
any part you do not understand. Take Generic Haldol exactly as directed. Do not
take more or less than prescribed by your
doctor.
What side effects can this medication cause?
Your urine may turn reddish-brown, but this effect is not harmful. Tell your doctor if any of
these side effects are severe or do not go away:
- drowsiness
- restlessness
- dry mouth
- breast enlargement
- weight gain
- constipation
- headache
If you experience any of the following side effects, call your
doctor immediately:
- restlessness
- blurred vision
- unusual face, mouth, or jaw movements
- seizures
- difficulty breathing
- fast or irregular heartbeat
- difficulty urinating
- confusion
- yellowing of the eyes or skin
- a skin rash
- muscle stiffness
- tremor
- weakness
- unusual bleeding or bruising
- anemia
What special precautions should I follow?
Before taking Generic Haldol,
- Tell your doctor if you are allergic to Generic Haldol,
aspirin, tartrazine, or any
other drugs.
- Tell your doctor what
medications you are taking, especially antacids, medication for colds or
depression, antihistamines, appetite reducers and vitamins.
- Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had seizures; depression;
asthma; urinary problems; irregular heartbeat;
blood pressure; kidney, liver, heart, or lung disease.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight and to wear
protective clothing, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Generic Haldol may make your skin
sensitive to sunlight.
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are
breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking Generic Haldol, call your
doctor.
- If you are having surgery, tell the doctor that you are taking Generic Haldol.
- Generic Haldol may make you drowsy. Do not drive a car
until you know how this drug affects you.
- Alcohol can add to the drowsiness caused by this drug.
