Why is this medication prescribed?
Proscar (Finasteride) is used to treat the condition
known as benign prostate hyperplasia or BPH. BPH
occurs in older men and results in an enlarged prostate
gland. Untreated BPH may be a
contributing factor in prostate cancer.
The active
ingredient Proscar (Finasteride), blocks the formation of DHT (one of the male
hormones that causes hairloss), and gives the hair follicles a
chance to recover and grow.
How should this medicine be used?
Typically you will be prescribed to take one
tablet a day, with or without food.
However you should only use Proscar (Finasteride) as directed by your
doctor.
What side effects can this medication cause? The side effects include:
- allergic reactions including rash, itching, hives and
swelling of the lips and face
- problems with ejaculation
- breast tenderness and enlargement
- testicular pain.
- Each
of the following side effects occurred in less than 2% of men:
decrease in sex drive; erection difficulty ; a decrease amount of semen.
What special precautions should I follow?
- It lowers readings of the PSA
screening test for prostate cancer, so make sure the doctor knows you are taking Proscar (Finasteride).
- Do not stop taking this medicine without
checking with your doctor.
- Stopping this medicine will result in a
return within one year to the same amount of baldness as when you
started.
- If a woman who is pregnant with
a male baby absorbs the active ingredient in Proscar (Finasteride), it may cause
abnormalities of a male baby’s sex organs.
- Women who are or may potentially be pregnant must not use
Proscar (Finasteride).
- It may take several months for the Proscar (Finasteride)
to work.
