Generic Xenical is used to help you lose
weight and to maintain your weight after weight loss. Generic Xenical is used in
patients with a certain weight who want to lose weight for their health to reduce problems such as high
blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease and diabetes. It
works in your intestines, by blocking some of the fat you eat from being
absorbed and disgested. This undigested fat is then removed in your bowel
movements.
How should this medicine be used?
The recommended dose is one capsule by mouth with liquid at each main meal.
You should use Generic Xenical together with a nutritionally balanced, mildly reduced-calorie diet
that contains no more than about 30 percent of calories from fat.
Generic Xenical is usually
taken 3 times a day with each main meal or up to 1 hour after a meal that contains fat.
Your meal should contain no more than 30% of calories from
fat. If a meal does not have fat, you may skip your dose. Follow the directions on your
prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor to explain any
part you do not understand. Take Generic Xenical exactly as directed. Do not take more
or less than prescribed by your doctor.
What side effects can this medication cause?
Side effects generally occur during the first few weeks of treatment
(The most common side effect of Generic Xenical is changes in bowel
movement habits) but tend to
subside later on. These side effects indicate
that the medicine is working.
Tell your doctor if
any of these side effects are severe or do not go away:
- increased number of bowel movements
- oily, spotting bowel movements
- gas with discharge
- oily or fatty stools
- an oily discharge
- inability to control bowel movements
- stomach pain
If you experience any of the following side effects, call your
doctor immediately:
- difficulty breathing
- itching
- s skin rash
- hives
- swelling
- chest pain
What special precautions should I follow?
Before taking Generic Xenical,
- Tell your doctor if you are allergic to Generic Xenical or any
other drugs.
- Tell your doctor what
medications you are taking, especially anticoagulants ('blood thinners') such as
warfarin; medications for diabetes, and insulin;
medications for weight loss; pravastatin; vitamins
A, E, K and beta-carotene; and herbal products.
- Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had bulimia or anorexia nervosa,
diabetes, kidney problems, gallstones, thyroid disease, or if you
have problems absorbing food (chronic malabsorption).
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are
breast-feeding.
- If you are taking
cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), you should take it 2 hours before or 2 hours after
Generic Xenical.
- Generic Xenical should be used in conjunction with a recommended mildly reduced-calorie diet.
