Why is this medication prescribed?
Generic Tegretol (Zeptol) is used in the treatment of seizure disorders,
including certain types of epilepsy.
It is also prescribed for trigeminal neuralgia (severe pain in the jaws)
and pain in the tongue and throat. Some doctors use Generic Tegretol (Zeptol)
to treat cocaine addiction, alcohol withdrawal, and emotional disorders like: abnormally aggressive behavior and depression.
How should this medicine be used?
This medication should be taken with food, never on an empty stomach.
Take exactly as directed by your doctor.
What side effects can this medication cause?
Generic Tegretol (Zeptol) may cause side effects. Tell your doctor if any
of these do not go away:
- vomiting
- drowsiness
- dizziness
- anxiety
- memory problems
- diarrhea
- constipation
- heartburn
- upset stomach
- dry mouth
- headache
The following symptoms are
uncommon, but if you experience any of them, tell your doctor immediately:
- rash
- yellowing of the skin/eyes
- confusion
- vision problems
- depression
- thinking about killing yourself
- chest pain
What special precautions should I follow?
Before taking Generic Tegretol (Zeptol),
- Do not take Generic Tegretol (Zeptol) if you are taking monoamine oxidase (MAO)
inhibitors, including isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil) selegiline
(Eldepryl); and tranylcypromine (Parnate), or have stopped taking them within
the past 2 weeks.
- Generic Tegretol (Zeptol) may decrease the effectiveness of
hormonal contraceptives like: birth control pills, patches, rings, injections, and
implants.
- Tell your doctor about all kind of medications you are taking.
- Tell your doctor what herbal products you are taking, especially St.
John's Wort.
- tell your doctor if you have or have ever had psychosis; glaucoma; or
thyroid, heart, kidney, or liver disease.
- Tell your doctor if you have unexpected vaginal bleeding
or think you may be pregnant while you are taking Generic Tegretol (Zeptol).
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are
breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking Generic Tegretol (Zeptol), call your
doctor.
- Do not breastfeed while you are taking Generic Tegretol (Zeptol).
- If you are having surgery, tell the doctor or
that you are taking Generic Tegretol (Zeptol).
