Why is this medication prescribed?
Generic Coumadin is used to prevent blood clots from forming or
growing larger. It works by stopping the formation of substances that cause blood clots.
How should this medicine be used? Generic Coumadin is usually
taken once a day. Follow the directions on your prescription label,
and ask your doctor to explain any part you do not understand.
Take Generic Coumadin exactly as directed. Do not take more or less than prescribed by your doctor.
What side effects can this medication cause?
Tell your doctor
if any of these side efffects are severe or do not go away:
- upset stomach
- a skin rash
- diarrhea
- headache
- fever
If you experience any of the following side efffects, call your
doctor immediately:
- sore throat
- unusual bleeding or bruising
- bloody stools
- blood in the urine
- chills
- tiredness
What special precautions should I follow?
- Stick to your PT/INR test schedule.
- You must stop taking Generic Coumadin (Warfarin ) if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are
breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking Generic Coumadin, call your
doctor immediately.
- Tell your doctor immediately if you find any signs of bleeding.
- Avoid drastic changes in dietary habits, such as eating
large amounts of leafy, green vegetables.
- Tell your doctor what herbal products you are taking,
especially: St. John's wort, danshen, dong quai,bromelains, garlic, Ginkgo
biloba, and coenzyme Q10. Do not start taking any herbal products without
talking to your doctor.
- Tell your doctor if you are allergic to Generic Coumadin, tartrazine,
aspirin, or any other medications.
