Why is this medication prescribed?
Generic Aricept (Donep / Donepezil) is a drug that is used in the treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease and known
as an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. One important neurotransmitter in
the brain is acetylcholine which is believed to be involved in the memory
process. People with Alzheimer's disease have less acetylcholine in their brains
than other people.
Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors have been shown to stabilize
Alzheimer’s disease and help slow the progression of the symptoms of the disease.
Generic Aricept (Donep / Donepezil) is used to treat Alzheimer's disease. It improves mental
function and help slow the progression of the symptoms of the disease. It works by increasing the amount of a certain natural substance in the
brain. Generic Aricept (Donep / Donepezil) is in a class of medications called cholinesterase inhibitors.
How should this medicine be used?
Generic Aricept (Donep / Donepezil) should be taken once a day just at bedtime, with or without food.
If Generic Aricept (Donep / Donepezil) is not taken regularly, it won't work.
The usual starting dose is 5 milligrams once
a day at bedtime for at least 4 to 6 weeks.
Take Generic Aricept (Donep / Donepezil) exactly as directed. Do not take
more or less than prescribed by your doctor.
What side effects can this medication cause?
Generic Aricept (Donep / Donepezil) may cause side effects. Tell your doctor if any of
these side effects are severe or do not go away:
- diarrhea
- upset stomach
- depression
- sleeping difficulties
- vomiting
- muscle cramps
- abnormal dreams
- feeling dizzy
- loss of appetite
- pain
- headache
- weight loss
- fatigue
The following side effects are
uncommon, but if you experience any of them, call your doctor immediately:
- itching
- slow heartbeat
- black and tarry stools
- red blood in stools
- seizures
- a skin rash
- bloody vomit
- fainting
- shaking
- urinating difficulties
What special precautions should I follow?
Before taking Generic Aricept (Donep / Donepezil)
- Tell your doctor if you are allergic to Generic Aricept (Donep / Donepezil),
glutethimide, or any other medications.
- Tell your doctor what
medications, you are
taking, especially the following: pain killers or treatment for anti-fungal or
antibiotics, arthritis, anti-depressants, muscle relaxants,
anticonvulsants or medication for a heart
disease.
- Tell your doctor if you have or have ever hada heart disease, ulcer,
asthma, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
- If you are having surgery, tell the doctor that you are taking Generic Aricept (Donep / Donepezil).
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are
breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking Generic Aricept (Donep / Donepezil), call your
doctor immediately.
