What is Viagra?

Viagra is a medication indicated for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED). ED, or impotence, is a condition that occurs when a male is unable to achieve and keep an erection hard enough for sexual intercouse. This condition may be caused by variable physical and psychological factors including other medical conditions, medicines, or hormonal imbalances. Viagra is also known by its generic or chemical name, sildenafil citrate. It is grouped into a classification of medications called Phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitors. Another formulation of sildenafil citrate is used to treat pulmonary hypertension and is known by its brand name, Revatio.

How does Viagra work?

Viagra works by relaxing smooth muscle tissue in the penis, specifically the corpus cavernosum. This relaxation of smooth muscle tissue allows greater inflow of blood into the penis. By blocking an enzyme called phosphodiesterase, Viagra allows a messenger molecule called cGMP to produce increased blood flow effects which results in an erection.

How do I take Viagra?

Viagra comes in dosage forms of 25 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg oral tablets. It is taken by mouth approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour before sexual activity. However, it may take up to 4 hours for full effectiveness. Viagra is not recommended for use more than once per day.

Side Effects

Viagra can cause a number of side effects. The most serious side effects may include sudden vision loss in one or both eyes, sudden hearing loss or impairment, and priapism, which is an erection that will not go away. If an erection lasts more than 4 hours, medical help should be sought immediately due to potential damage in the penis. Other common side effects include headache, flushing, upset stomach, abnormal vision, stuffy or runny nose, back pain, muscle pain, nausea, dizziness, and rash. Viagra should be stopped immediately if any signs of heart attack arise such as chest pain, nausea, sweating, or pain and pressure that spreads from the upper arm to the face.

Drug Interactions

Viagra should not be used while also taking certain medications. Because of its cardiovascular effects, it may increase the effects of blood pressure medications such as nitrates, alpha blockers and antihypertensives. Taking these medications at the same time as Viagra may lead to severe hypotension, or low blood pressure. Because Viagra is metabolized in the liver, it should not be taken with medications that are classified as CYP3A4 inhibitors. These medications include ritonavir, saquinavir, ketoconazole, itraconazole, and erythromycin among others. Taking these medications may increase the levels of Viagra in the body which may lead to a higher risk of side effects. Viagra may need to be initiated at a lower dose when taking the aforementioned medications.

Can I use Viagra if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

While Viagra is classified as pregnancy category B, it is not indicated for use in women. No safety studies have been exclusively performed for this population although animal studies have shown no evidence of fetal harm.

Precautions

Viagra should not be taken if there is a high risk of cardiovascular events as indicated by a physician. Patients with cardiovascular defects or debilitating heart failure may be at higher risk of adverse effects. Lower doses of Viagra are recommended in elderly patients and those with severe renal and hepatic impairment. Seek medical help in cases of priapism or sudden hearing and vision loss.

Taking Viagra does not offer any protection against sexually transmitted diseases. It is important to take all necessary measures to protect against sexually transmitted diseases, including Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).
