What is it

Lasix (Generic Furosemide) is a loop diuretic used in treatment of water retention in edema and congestive heart failure. This powerful diuretic or water pill can also be used in treatment of hypertension, cirrhosis, nephrotic syndrome and renal impairment. Because it may lower the levels of salts in the body, medical supervision and frequent controls are required during treatment.

Classification and Mechanism of Action

Lasix (Generic Furosemide) is a medication from the category of loop diuretics. It blocks the absorption of sodium, chloride and water from the fluid filtered through kidney tubules, which results in diuresis or increased output of urine. That way the excess fluid in the body is removed. It takes about one hour for furosemide to start working and its diuretic effect lasts up to 6 to 8 hours.

How to take it

Dosage

In treatment of edema in adults the usual starting dose ranges from 20 mg to 80 mg (half a 40 mg pill or two 40 mg pills) taken as a single dose. The dose may be repeated six to eight hours later, if needed. The recommended dosage for treatment of hypertension is 40 mg twice a day.

Overdose

Symptoms of an overdose may include weakness, fatigue, severe headache, dehydration and fainting. Never take more than the prescribed amount of this drug. In case of overdose, contact an ER or your local poison control center.

Missed Dose

If you accidentally skip or forget a dose, take one when you remember or when you can, but not if the next scheduled dose is too near. Doubling the dose may result in dangerous side effects and potentially in an overdose.

Warnings and Precautions

It may not be suitable for people suffering from kidney failure, gout, lupus, liver problems and diabetes. This drug may make you sensitive to the sun and it may also cause dizziness, in which case it is recommended to avoid driving and operating heavy machinery. Some people may need to take extra potassium through food or supplements while taking Generic Furosemide. Drugs that may interact with Generic Furosemide include lithium, ethacrynic acid and some NSAIDs.

Possible Side Effects

Generic Furosemide may cause dizziness, headache or blurred vision, especially at the beginning of the treatment. These side effects are expected to disappear as your body adapts to the treatment. More serious side effects include dehydration (with symptoms like muscle cramps, dry mouth, nausea, irregular heartbeat and decreased amount of urine), as well as hearing changes, tingling or numbness in legs, yellowing of the eyes and skin, and allergic reactions (with symptoms that may include rash, hives, swelling, difficulty breathing, irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, fainting, seizures, coma).

When should it not be used?

It should not be used in case of previous allergic reactions to furosemide or any of the inactive ingredients of the drug. Its effects on the unborn baby are not yet completely known, which is why pregnant women should only take it when absolutely needed.
