Description

What is this drug?

Betagan spray is an anti-inflammatory drug prescribed only in veterinary cases especially in dogs. It is used to treat superficial skin lesions which are caused by bacteria. It is not recommended for viral or fungal infections in dogs.

Classification and Mechanism of Action

Betagan contains Gentamicin which is an antibiotic belonging to the class of aminoglycoside and a steroid hormone – Betamethasone. Gentamicin is an effective topical antibiotic which kills a broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria. Betamethasone is a steroid hormone helpful in reducing the symptoms of inflammation.

Looking after the drug

Store the bottle in an upright position between 2° and 30°C. Keep it away from kids.

How to take the medication?

Clear the area around the lesion and spray it twice on to the lesion.

Dosage

2 sprays, 2-4 times in a day. Consult your vet before using it.

Overdose

Consult your vet right away.

Missed Dose

If it is time for the next dose then skip the missed dose or else administer it as soon as you remember. Do not double dose.

Warnings and Precautions

It is safe to use in dogs only. Do not use in humans or any other species. Use it externally. Consult your doctor if you see any reaction to it.

Possible Side Effects

·       Elevated Liver enzymes,

·       Weight loss,

·       Anorexia,

·       Polyuria

·       Polydipsia, and

·       Nausea and vomiting (Bloody occasionally)

When Betagan spray should not be used?

Do not use it if you notice any allergic reaction to the drug.

How long should you take Betagan spray?

As long as prescribed.
