Why is this medication prescribed?
Depo provera (Medroxyprogesterone) is used to prevent pregnancy (it lasts for 3 months).
It thickens the cervical mucus and changes the
uterine lining, making it harder for sperm to enter or survive in
the uterus. Depo provera (Medroxyprogesterone)
is a very effective method of birth control but does not prevent the
spread of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) or other sexually transmitted diseases.
Depo provera (Medroxyprogesterone) is in a class of medications called progestins.
How should this medicine be used? The first shot
of Depo-Provera is usually given during or a few days after the
start of a menstrual period. After 24 hours, the shot is effective
birth control for the next 13 weeks.
It is usually given once every 3 months (13 weeks) by your doctor.
What side effects can this medication cause?
- weight gain
- bleeding between menstrual periods
- lack of menstrual periods
- hot flashes
- headaches
- nervousness
- bloating
- acne
- hair loss
- decreased in sex drive
- breast tenderness
What special precautions should I follow?
- You may face an increased
risk of osteoporosis.
- You should eat plenty of foods that are rich in calcium and
vitamin D while you are taking Depo provera (Medroxyprogesterone) injection to decrease the
loss of calcium from your bones.
- tell your doctor if you are allergic to Depo provera (Medroxyprogesterone)
or any other medications.
- If you become
pregnant while using Depo Provera,
there may be an increased risk of premature birth.
