Why is this medication prescribed?
Provera (Medroxyprogesterone) is used to treat abnormal menstruation, irregular vaginal bleeding,
renal cell cancer and endometrial cancer.It is used to oppose
endrometrial effects on post menopausal oestregen
treatment. Provera (Medroxyprogesterone) belongs to a class of hormones called
progestins.
How should this medicine be used?
It is
usually taken once a day on certain days of a regular monthly cycle.
Follow the directions on your
prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor to explain any
part you do not understand. Take Provera (Medroxyprogesterone) exactly as directed. Do not
take more or less than prescribed by your
doctor.
What side effects can this medication cause?
Tell your doctor
if any of these side effects are severe or do not go away:
- drowsiness
- upset stomach
- acne
- changes in menstrual flow
- hair growth on face
- irregular vaginal bleeding
- hair loss
- sleeping difficulties
- weight gain
The following side effects are
uncommon, but if you experience any of them, call your doctor immediately:
- faintness
- shortness of breath
- sudden sharp or crushing chest pain
- swelling of the hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
- fast or irregular heartbeat
- vision problems
- missed periods
- depression
- yellowing of the skin/eyes
- hives
- a skin rash
- difficulty breathing or swallowing
What special precautions should I follow?
- Tell your doctor what medications you are
taking, especially aminoglutethimide (Cytadren)
- You may face an increased
risk of osteoporosis.
- You should eat plenty of foods that are rich in calcium and
vitamin D while you are taking Provera (Medroxyprogesterone) to decrease the
loss of calcium from your bones.
- Tell your doctor if you are allergic to Provera (Medroxyprogesterone)
or any other medications.
- If you become
pregnant while using Provera (Medroxyprogesterone),
there may be an increased risk of premature birth.
- Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had cancer of the breasts or
female organs; unexplained vaginal bleeding; blood clots in your legs, brain, or eyes;
liver, kidney, or heart diseas;stroke; seizures; asthma; diabetes.
