Why is this medication prescribed?
Premarin is used to treat vasomotor menopausal symptoms,
vaginal atrophy, hypoestrogenism and prevention of osteoporosis.
Climara patch releases the hormone estradiol continuously. It reaches the
bloodstream through the skin and leads to a constant blood level of the hormone.
How should this medicine be used?
Typically, the dosage is 0.625mg.
Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully,
and ask your doctor to explain any part you do not understand. Do not
use more or less than prescribed by your doctor. Do not stop
using Premarin without talking to your doctor.
What side effects can this medication cause?
Premarin may increase the chance of cancer of the uterus.
If you have had a hysterectomy you do not have this risk.
A progestin may prescribe along with Premarin to reduce this
chance.
The side effects include:
- abdominal pain
- blood clots
- nausea
- breast tenderness
- bloating
- diarrhea
- appetite changes
- acne
- swelling of hands, feet, or lower legs
- irregular bleeding
- hair loss
- headache
What special precautions should I follow?
- Tell your doctor if you are allergic to Premarin or any
other drugs.
- Tell your doctor what
medications you are taking, especially anticoagulants ('blood thinners') such as warfarin (Coumadin);
phenylbutazone; carbamazepine (Tegretol); antibiotics or anti-infectives; phenobarbital; phenytoin (Dilantin);
primidone; rifampin; and steroids (Decadron, Medrol, Prednisone).
- Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had high
blood pressure; cancer; diabetes; asthma; a history
of stroke, blood clots, toxemia , or
heart attack; high blood cholesterol and fats; epilepsy; a history of
depression; liver, kidney, or heart disease; jaundice;
abnormal genital bleeding.
- Pregnant women should not
take Premarin because of possible risk to the fetus.
