Why is this medication prescribed?
Eltroxin (Synthroid) is used to treat
hypothyroidism, a condition where the thyroid gland doesn't produce enough
thyroid hormone. Without this hormone, the body cannot function properly.
Eltroxin (Synthroid) is also used to treat
congenital hypothyroidism (cretinism) and goiter (enlarged thyroid gland).
How should this medicine be used?
Take the dosage with a full glass of water . Take the dosage in the morning to prevent
sleeping problems at night.
Take this medicine as directed by
your doctor. Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly.
What side effects can this medication cause?
Side effects from Eltroxin (Synthroid) are not common, they
mayoccur. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go
away:
- vomiting
- diarrhea
- upset stomach
- nervousness
- irritability
- insomnia
- excessive sweating
- increased appetite
- weight loss
- tremor
- headache
- fever
- hair loss
If you experience one of the following symptoms, call your
doctor immediately:
- chest pain
- irregular or rapid heartbeat
What special precautions should I follow?
- Tell your doctor if you have a heart
disease such as coronary artery disease, angina, or hypertension.
- Eltroxin (Synthroid) (Levothyroxine) should not be taken if you
have other hormonal problems that are not being adequately treated.

Blood sugar changes can occur if you have diabetes, and special monitoring
may be necessary.
- Eltroxin (Synthroid) (Levothyroxine) is in the FDA pregnancy category A.
This means that Eltroxin (Synthroid) (Levothyroxine) is safe for use during pregnancy. This drug does pass into breast milk, but it won't harm a
nursing infant.
- It
is also safe to take thyroid hormones if you are breast-feeding a
baby.
