Why is this medication prescribed?
Aldactone is used to treat high blood
pressure and fluid retention caused by various conditions, including heart
heart failureand liver disease. It causes the kidneys to eliminate unneeded water and salt from the
body into the urine.
How should this medicine be used?
The dose is usually slowly increased from 50mg to
200mg a day, taken at night. It may take more than 6 months to see
improvement in the skin condition.
Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask
your doctor to explain any part you do not understand. Take
Aldactone exactly as directed. Do not take more or less than prescribed by your doctor.
What side effects can this medication cause? Side effects may include:
- frequent urination
- drowsiness
- feeling dizzy
- headache
- vomiting
- diarrhea
- upset stomach
- enlarged breast
- irregular menstrual periods
If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your
doctor immediately:
- muscle weakness
- fatigue
- skin rash
- vomiting blood
- irregular heartbeat
- unusual bruising or bleeding
- yellowing of the skin/eyes
What special precautions should I follow?
Before taking Aldactone,
- Tell your doctor if you are
allergic to Aldactone or hydrochlorothiazide.
- Tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to Aldactone,
sulfa drugs, or any other drugs.
- Tell your doctor what
medications you are taking, especially potassium supplements; aspirin; captopril (Capoten);
enalapril (Vasotec); digoxin
(Lanoxin); medications for arthritis, diabetes, or high blood
pressure; lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril) and vitamins.
- Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had gout, diabetes,
or kidney disease.
- This drug may make you drowsy. Don't drive a car
until you know how this drug affects you.
- Do not take this medicine if
you are taking amiloride or triamterene.
