Description
What is it

Eulexin is an oral medication from the group of non-steroidal antiandrogen drugs. Its primary use is treatment of prostate cancer. It is usually used in combination with other medications and sometimes with radiation therapy. In addition to treatment of prostate cancer, Eulexin can be used to reduce excessive androgen levels in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome.

Classification and Mechanism of Action

The active ingredient of Eulexin is flutamide, a non-steroidal antiandrogen drug and basically an anti-testosterone. It competes with testosterone and dihydrotestosterone when it comes to binding to the androgen receptors in the prostate. It prevents those receptors from stimulating the abnormal growth of the prostate cells and thus inhibits the progression of cancer.

Looking after it

Eulexin should be kept at room temperature, in a dark and dry place, away from the reach of children and pets, and used before its expiration date.

How to take it

Eulexin is an oral medication, taken by mouth, with some water, regardless of meals. It is usually taken three times per day, unless otherwise indicated by the doctor. It works best when taken in regular intervals.

Dosage

The usual dosage in treatment of prostate cancer is 250 mg of Eulexin every eight hours. When used for treatment of hirsutism in women with excessive androgen levels, the usual dosage is 250 mg of Eulexin two to three times per day.

Overdose

Signs of a Eulexin overdose may include slow breathing, irregular heartbeat, goosebumps, shakiness, loss of appetite, vomiting, dizziness and severe fatigue. In case of an overdose please seek immediate medical attention.

Missed Dose

If you happen to miss a dose, take one when you can, but not if the time for the next scheduled dose is near. Do not double the dose to make up for the one you missed.

Warnings and Precautions

Before you start using Eulexin, inform your doctor of you medical history, especially of hemoglobin M disease, certain enzyme deficiencies and liver problems. Caution is recommended for smokers. Also make sure to inform your doctor of any other medications you might be taking, especially testosterone, anabolic steroids, warfarin and other blood thinners and DHEA. Liver problems are sometimes associated with the use of this drug, which is why it is recommended to have regular check-ups and tests while using Eulexin.

Possible Side Effects

Eulexin may cause hot flashes, low libido, erectile dysfunction, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, orange-colored urine and enlargement of breasts. More serious side effects, which should be instantly reported to a doctor, include mental changes, breast lumps, severe fatigue, pale skin and bluish lips and nails, shortness of breath and rapid heartbeat.

Treating prostate cancer

Eulexin has been largely replaced by some newer drugs from the group of non-steroidal antiandrogens, mostly due to fewer side effects associated with those newer drugs. Still, many doctors continue to prescribe Eulexin and other drugs based on flutamide for patients suffering from prostate cancer, especially in association with other forms of cancer treatment, such as radiation therapy.

When should it not be used?

Eulexin should not be used in case of previous allergic reactions to flutamide or any of the drug's inactive components. It should not be used in pregnancy or breastfeeding period.

How long should you take it

Take Eulexin for as long as your doctor has indicated. Do not stop using this drug on your own, even if you feel your symptoms might be improving.
