Classification and Mechanism of Action

Generic Betoptic is a beta receptor blocker, which means that it reduces blood pressure. In the eye, it causes the intraocular blood pressure to drop , through the reduction in production of aqueous humor in the eye. This reduces the risk of damage to the optic nerve and vision loss in people who have glaucoma and increased intraocular pressure.

You should keep your Generic Betoptic drops in a cool, dark place away from moisture.

How to take the medication

Generic Betoptic should be used exactly as prescribed by the doctor. You need to wash your hands before using the drug. You will get the instructions for putting in the eye drops with your medication. You should not let the dripper touch any surface, including your eye and hands. You should try and close the tear ducts with your fingers as you put in the drops. Generic Betoptic can be used with contact lenses.

Dosage

You will take only as much Generic Betoptic as the doctor prescribes. Usually, the dosage is one eye drop in the affected eye(s), twice a day.

Overdose

If you ingest Generic Betoptic or if you think you have put in too much of the drug in your eyes, contact emergency medical services.

Missed Dose

If you forget to apply Generic Betoptic, do this as soon as you remember. Do not double your next dosage to make up for the missed one.

Warnings and Precautions

Do not ingest Generic Betoptic orally. Your vision may be blurred upon applying Generic Betoptic. Do not drive or do anything potentially dangerous until you can see well. If you undergo any surgery or get any anesthetics, tell the medical staff that you are using Generic Betoptic. Do not let the dropper come into contact with any surfaces, including your hands and eyes.

Possible Side Effects

More common side effects of Generic Betoptic include eye discomfort and watery eyes. Uncommon side effects include eye redness, itching, decreased sensitivity in the eye, keratitis, discoloration of the eye, intolerance to light, difficulties sleeping, headaches, short breath, hair loss. If you experience any side effects that seem bothersome and unusually severe, contact your doctor at once.

Treating glaucoma

Glaucoma is a condition that affects the eye and causes increase intraocular pressure. This increases chances of vision loss and nerve damage in the eye. Generic Betoptic has been shown to lower intraocular pressure and thus reduce the risk of these developments that can be caused by glaucoma.

When the drug should not be used

Generic Betoptic should not be used by people allergic to Betaxolol, people with sinus bradycardia, cardiogenic shock, people with overt cardiac failure and patients with greater than first degree atrioventricular block. Tell your doctor about any other chronic conditions that you might have before they prescribe you with Generic Betoptic.

How long should you take the drug

You should take Generic Betoptic for as long as the doctor tells you to. Do not discontinue the drug unless your doctor has instructed you to do so.
