Pharmacological action: anti-inflammatory, Antirheumatic

Pharmacological properties

This product is an IL-1 inhibitor. It is used for treatment of osteoarthritis. It has been shown by various experiments and studies that it can induce cartilage formation, has analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic effect. It does not inhibit prostaglandin synthesis. It can thus slow down this disease process.

Indications

Primary and secondary osteoarthritis

Dosing and Administration

Diacerein is ingested with meal. It is swallowed without chewing with water, 50mg 2 times a day (morning and evening). It is usually taken for a long time (at least 4 months) or even more. Before the desired effects have been established, diacerein may be used in conjunction with analgesic drugs (including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). It is recommended to monitor the blood, urine (creatinine and creatinine clearance), liver function tests (liver transaminases) with use of this drug. Diacerein dose adjustment is with deterioration of renal function.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity including to the Anthraquinone drugs (e.g. laxatives), pregnancy, lactation etc

Severe renal or hepatic failure, inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal obstructionPregnancy and breast-feedingThe use of diacerein is contraindicated in pregnancy. While using diacerein, the mother should stop breast-feeding.

Side effects

 

  • Digestive system: Nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, hepatitis
  • Allergic reactions: Fever, urticaria, bronchospasm, anaphylaxis, angioedema
  • Others: Malaise, discoloration of urine from yellow to brown

 

Diacerein interaction with other substances

Antacids reduce the absorption of diacerein. Diacerein is not recommended for use with drugs that increase the volume of intestinal contents (for example, a large amount of fiber). Medicinal preparations which contain magnesium hydroxide and / or aluminum hydroxide reduce the bioavailability of Diacerein.

Overdose

In case of overdose, one may develop diarrhea, weakness.
Treatment: symptomatic treatment; with severe diarrhea should monitor the electrolyte composition of blood plasma.

It should be stored at room temperature in an airtight drug container
