Why is this medication prescribed?
Zidovir (G. AZT/ZDV) is used alone or with other medications to treat
human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in patients with or without
acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
Zidovir (G. AZT/ZDV) is given to
HIV-positive pregnant women to prevent the infection from going to the baby.
However, HIV infection may still occur in the infant despite this treatment.
Zidovir (G. AZT/ZDV) is not a cure and may not decrease the number
of HIV-related illnesses.
How should this medicine be used?
Zidovir (G. AZT/ZDV) is usually taken 3 to 5 times a day.
Take Zidovir (G. AZT/ZDV) exactly as directed. Do not take more or less
than prescribed by your doctor.
Follow the directions on your prescription label
carefully, and ask your doctor to explain any part you do not
understand.
Continue to take Zidovir (G. AZT/ZDV) even if you feel well. Do not stop
taking Zidovir (G. AZT/ZDV) without talking to your doctor.
What side effects can this medication cause?
Tell your doctor if
any of these common Side effects are severe:
- headache
- feeling dizzy
- sleeping difficulties
- diarrhea
- loose stools
- constipation
- stomach pain

What special precautions should I follow?
Before taking Zidovir (G. AZT/ZDV),
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or if you are
breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking Zidovir (G. AZT/ZDV), call your
doctor.
- Tell your doctor and pharmacist about all kind of
medications you are taking, especially probenecid (Benemid), aspirin,
cimetidine (Tagamet), foscarnet (Foscavir),
ganciclovir (Cytovene), indomethacin (Indocin), interferon, lorazepam, acyclovir (Zovirax),
(Ativan), oxazepam (Serax), valproic acid (Depakene,
Depakote), acetaminophen, fluconazole (Diflucan) and vitamins.
- Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had kidney or liver disease, any
disease or swelling of the muscle, a history of alcohol abuse, anemia, or
bleeding problems.
- Tell your doctor if you are allergic to Zidovir (G. AZT/ZDV) or any
other drugs.
- Tell your doctor if you drink alcohol.
