Why is this medication prescribed?
Prinivil (Zestril) is used in the treatment of high
blood pressure.
It is used in combination with other
medications to treat heart failure.
It works by decreasing production of a substance that
that tighten the blood vessels, so blood flows more smoothly and the
heart can pump blood more efficiently.
Prinivil (Zestril) is a type of drug called an ACE inhibitor.
How should this medicine be used?
Prinivil (Zestril) can be taken with or without food. Take it exactly as prescribed. Stopping
Prinivil (Zestril) suddenly could cause your blood pressure to rise.
Do not take more or less than prescribed by your doctor.
What side effects can this medication cause? Tell your doctor if any of
these side effects are severe or do not go away:
- headache
- dizziness
- excessive tiredness
- upset stomach
- diarrhea
- runny nose
- weakness
- decrease in sex drive
- a skin rash
The following side effects are
uncommon, but if you experience any of them, call your doctor immediately:
- lightheadedness
- yellowing of the skin/eyes
- hoarseness
- swelling of the face, throat, tongue, hands, feet, ankles, or
lower legs
- difficulty breathing
- chills
- fainting
- chest pain
What special precautions should I follow?
Before taking Prinivil (Zestril),
- Tell your doctor if you are allergic to Prinivil (Zestril),
enalapril (Vasotec), benazepril (Lotensin), captopril (Capoten), fosinopril
(Monopril), moexipril (Univasc), perindopril (Aceon), quinapril (Accupril),
ramipril (Altace), trandolapril (Mavik), or any other medications.
- Tell your doctor what
medications you are taking, especially the following: aspirin and other
nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) such as
diuretics ('water pills'); indomethacin
(Indocin); lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid); and potassium supplements.
- Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had heart or kidney disease;
scleroderma; lupus or diabetes.
- Tell your doctor if you plan to become pregnant or are breast-feeding.
- if you are having surgery, tell the doctor or
dentist that you are taking Prinivil (Zestril).
