Why is this medication prescribed?
Azithral (Generic Ultreon) is used to treat bacterial
infections like: lung, pneumonia, throat, skin and ear infections.
It can also be used to treat sexually transmitted infections
like: Gonorrhea and Chlamydia. It works by altering the
chemical activity inside the bacteria denying proteins needed for
survival.
How should this medicine be used?
Most infections will take approximately 5 days of
treatment except for STI which are commonly treated by single dose
of Azithral (Generic Ultreon).
You are advised to take Azithral (Generic Ultreon) as directed
by your doctor.
What side effects can this medication cause?
Side effects considered rare, but may occur and include:
- stomach pain
- vomiting
- stomach cramps
- diarrhea
- skin rash
If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately:
- difficulty breathing or swallowing
- severe skin rash
- hives
- pale feces
- wheezing
- yellow skin or eyes
- dark urine
What special precautions should I follow?
You are advised to consult your doctor if
you are taking any other medications, especially if they include
,astemizole such as Hismanal, anti-coagulants such as wafarin, lovastatin, carbamazepine, terfenadine,
cisapride, clozapine, cyclosporine, digoxin, disopyramide, vitamin supplements, ergotamine, phenytoin, pimozide, felodipine or theophylline.
Azithral (Generic Ultreon) should be taken alongside antacid medicines such as
Maalox or Mylanta. You are advised to wait for at least 2 hours
after using an antacid before taking Azithral (Generic Ultreon). If you have a history of liver, kidney or heart disease
you should tell your doctor.
