Why is this medication prescribed?
Topamac (Generic Topamax) is used in combination
with other anticonvulsant agents to treat certain
types of seizures in patients with epilepsy or Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.
Topamac (Generic Topamax) is used to treat patients who continue having seizures even if they take other
anti-seizure medications. It works by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain.
How should this medicine be used?
It is usually taken with or without food twice a day.
Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor to explain any part you do not understand. Take Topamac (Generic Topamax) exactly as
directed. Do not take more or less than prescribed
by your doctor.
What side effects can this medication cause?
Topamac (Generic Topamax) can cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar),
especially in children. If you experience this symptoms, eat or drink a food
or beverage with sugar in it, and call your
doctor immediately. Symptoms of low blood sugar include:
- shakiness
- dizziness
- rapid heartbeat
- confusion
- vision problems
- headache
- sudden hunger
- tingling of the mouth
- weakness
- fatigue
- sweating
- pale color
Tell your doctor if any of
these side effects are severe or do not go away:
- lack of coordination
- trouble walking
- confusion
- nervousness
- weight loss
- constipation
- aggressive behavior
- memory problems
- depression
- slow thinking or movements
- headache
- drowsiness
- weakness
- sleeping difficulties
- extreme thirst
- diarrhea
- heartburn
- swelling of the tongue
- dry mouth
- teary or dry eyes
- speech problems
- missed menstrual periods
- excessive menstrual bleeding
- hair loss
- runny nose
What special precautions should I follow?
Before taking Topamac (Generic Topamax),
- Tell your doctor if you are allergic to Topamac (Generic Topamax) or any
other medications.
- Topamac (Generic Topamax) must be used cautiously by patients with impaired
liver function.
- Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems or if you are on hemodialysis.
- Topamac (Generic Topamax) trigger severe nearsightedness along with
increased pressure inside the eye.
If you develop eye pain or blurred vision, tell your doctor immediately.
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are

doctor.

- Topamac (Generic Topamax) may make you dizzy and confused. Do not drive a car or operate machinery until you know
how this medication affects you.
- Alcohol can cause seizures or make seizures worse.
- Topamac (Generic Topamax) can decrease the
effectiveness of oral contraceptives.
- Topamac (Generic Topamax) can prevent you from sweating and make it
harder for your body to cool down when it gets very hot, soavoid exposure to
heat and drink plenty of fluids.
- You may be more likely to develop a kidney stone
while you are taking Topamac (Generic Topamax). Drink plenty of fluids to
prevent kidney stones from forming.
